Deuteronomy 31
Kids these days think that they’re the only ones that had ‘apps.’ Well, WE had apps too!
If your Dad told you something one time, how much impact would that have on you? Twice? How about 3 times? If he said it 7 times, do you think you’d stop and listen to him? I’m thinking that I was never told something more than 3 times in a row…within a small period of time, before I would have a physical application to aid in my listening ability and to fortify my compliance with the request. (I honestly think this would be stretching it. Two times…then that’s going to get The APP!)
Vs 1-2: Moses is told he’s not going over Jordan.
Vs 3-5: God will go before you, He will destroy nations THRU you and you will possess the land. He will defeat kings similarly like He did Og and Sihon. He wants you to utterly destroy them.
Vs 6-8: Twice in two verses he repeats this phrase…”Be strong and be brave”…in fact, this phrase will be found THREE times in this chapter alone. Then in Joshua 1…it’s found another four times! A total of SEVEN times this phrase is spoken between Deuteronomy 31/Joshua 1…this is a ‘subtle’ command!!
The second part, “Fear not, nor be afraid. He will not fail you, nor forsake you”…is spoken THREE times. God is all about patterns in the Word, and making certain we get the point! (More to come on this.)
Vs 14-15: God told Moses that he was going to die, and to get Joshua and go to the Tabernacle so that GOD could give Joshua a charge. We see God shows up in a column of a cloud/smoke.
Vs 23: God gave Joshua a charge, and then spoke to him saying, “Be strong and be brave, you’re going to bring Israel into the land of promise and I’m going to be with you.” This is an entirely different event from last week’s lesson, where it was Moses’ hands that were laid on Joshua. This time in Deuteronomy 31, it is God Almighty coming upon Joshua and speaking to him through the column of cloud. ( Another theophany or appearance of a pre-Incarnate Jesus.)
Has God ever given YOU a charge?
Deuteronomy 34
Vs 1-3: God took Moses up to a mountain called Nebo, all the way to the peak called Pisgah that overlooks Jericho. He saw all of the land of promise to the Mediterranean Sea. For many years I just overlooked this. Then I began to contemplate how this was possible? Pisgah is approximately 2300 ft in elevation. I ran it through a ‘line of sight calculation’ off the inner web…and the approximate line of sight is: 70.5 miles. The distance from Pisgah to the Sea is 68 miles. More study ensued. On a perfect day, the haze is too much to see very far at all. I truly believe the Lord provided Moses a supernatural panorama of the Promised Land, as it was to become…even though he was barred from entry, God in His mercy, allowed him to view it before he passed.
Vs 5-6: Moses died on top of the mountain, and the Lord buried him in Beth-peor. However, if we look at Jude 9, Satan was disputing with the Archangel Michael, about the body of Moses. Although he was 120 years old, he was in perfect health. We will see Moses again with Enoch speaking with Jesus, on the Mountain of Transfiguration.
Vs 9: Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands upon him. (Isaiah 11:2)
Joshua Chapter One
After the death of Moses…there was a period of mourning for 30 days by all of Israel. We don’t know how long the Lord waited to speak with Joshua, but it wasn’t immediately. Too…it wasn’t through a priest’ Urim and Thummin. Look at the language the Lord is using! These aren’t yes/no answers to questions. This is a personal message from God to Joshua.
God begins to command/decree to Joshua: Get up and go over the Jordan, you and all the people of Israel, and everywhere you step…I give to you…and here are the boundaries for you to walk out. God was plainly saying ‘you’re going to have to get up and take this land. I’ll enable you to be victorious, but you will have to fight and walk out your deliverance.’ Does this sound familiar? Isn’t this the same thing He’s told us to do? No denying the reality of warfare with the spiritual enemies of the Kingdom, but also reminding us of the fact we fight from the place of victory!
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” 1John 5:4
Vs 5-7 I want to take a moment as promised and break down a few of these recurring phrases from God to Joshua:
- Be strong- ‘hazaq’ hardened and fortified, strengthened for battle
- Be brave- ‘Ames’ strengthen, make alert, to secure solid
- Don’t fear- ‘yare’ don’t reverence or be in awe or astonished
- Don’t be afraid- ‘aras’ don’t dread or tremble
- The Lord your God goes with You
- He won’t fail You
- He won’t forsake you
7 things God told Joshua, 7 times between Deut.31/Joshua 1
Why did God need to tell Joshua these things so many times?
Because of the battles that God knew were ahead of Joshua. Any good parent will try to prepare their child for adulthood, much less difficult times and trials.
At the end of Joshua campaigns, in Joshua 12:24, we will see he defeated 31 kings!!! My own casual study will show AT LEAST 21 people-groups/nations defeated, with more to come. Mind you these areas are dominated by ‘princes’…Daniel 13 speaks of the prince of Persia. Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that WE wrestle against:
- Principalities
- Powers
- Rulers of the darkness of this world
- Spiritual forces of wickedness in high places
There is no doubt in my mind that this study is one of the MOST needed and timely studies I’ve ever undertaken. I feel such a burden about it’s purpose and the delivery of this message. We are living in unprecedented days. Days the Bible speaks of with tremendous gravity. Jesus compared them to the ‘days of Noah.’ There is rampant witchcraft, satanic ritual abuse, paganism on television and the internet, and it’s rising in a crescendo of intensity. But God…
